Ivatt 2-6-2T BR Late Crest 41231 Non Fitted

Noting the success of the GWR Small Prairie tanks (45XX), George Ivatt designed the Ivatt Class 2-6-2T engine for similar Branch line work on the LMS. They were rated initially as 2P but were later classified upon nationalisation by BR as 2MT.

The class was introduced in 1946 and ten were built by the LMS and were numbered 1200–1209.

Upon nationalisation in 1948 BR renumbered these as 41200–41209.

The design was considered to be well executed and an additional 120 were built by BR, numbered 41210–41329.

Most were built at Crewe but the last ten were built at the Derby Works.

Fifty engines were fitted with push pull equipment, these being Nos. 41210–41229, 41270–41289 and 41320–41329.

Four examples survive into preservation.

  • Finely moulded body
  • NEM pockets
  • Supplied with both standard and Dapol Easi Shunt magnetic couplings
