Designed specifically to provide a locomotive for push-pull 'auto train' working which delivered more power than the 0-4-2 tank engines. The engines met the operating departments requirements for up to four trailer coaches to be hauled during peak hours and for introducing the more economical auto-train working over routes with stiffer gradients than the 4-coupled engines could manage.
