After changes in legislation regarding animal welfare and transport, many older style cattle wagons became redundant and alternative uses had to be found.

The fruit Mex is one such wagon and are a derivation of the GWR cattle wagon the 8 ton Mex B with added top section side slat. panels This wagon was well suited to the carriage of the considerable amounts of  fresh fruit, particularly strawberries from the West Country and the Vale of Evesham
